Richard's Parentheses

In Part two of the novel you see these blocks of paragraphs that are in parentheses. These parentheses only include the thoughts of Richard Wright, like most of the book, but they possess something more in them. The passages in parentheses show Wright in a more sophisticated and thoughtful way. He analyzes race and the differences between whites and blacks. His comments on the life of blacks shows how he feels about the struggles they go through, and he finds a reason for these struggles. For example on page two hundred and seventy-two & seventy-three, Wright talks about the white girls that work with him, and how they could never really understand the life of a Negro. Wright comments on how even though they (whites and blacks) may have the same tongue, blacks spoke a different language. In the parentheses Richard shows great knowledge and sophistication while he expresses his position on the meaning of life between whites and blacks.

Mr. Randle,

I think you did a great job analyzing what Wright was trying to accomplish by putting blocks of paragraphs in parentheses.

I really like that Wright slows down in the second part of the book and really thinks about the situations he faces. By taking a step back, Wright is able to express himself and his new position on the meaning of life.

Wright also seems to be making a turn for the better. He moved out of the rowdy South and is now becoming a more mature, thoughtful person. He recognizes what is happening and is able to see the differences between whites and blacks.

I agree with Ms. Ludlow, Nick did a very good job of analyzing the parenthesis that Wright uses. I also love how Wright analyzes his thoughts and looks back, especially since he is older and has had more life experience. Also, ever sine he has left the south, he has been expanding as a character, which is good. I personally think that the reason Wright uses parenthesis in Section 2 rather than Section 1, is because he has developed more as a person, and therefore has more to reflect on. In Section 2, he is also able to truly recognize the difference between blacks and whites, like Lauren said.
Good job Nick, I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts.
